Ukulele Newsletter sent out April 7, 2013

Greetings from ukulele headquarters in my basement. Time to get your ukulele out of that fancy case and come rawk.

First: Come play with us. We've been invited to play at the opening of the West Rail Line for the RTD Lightrail on Saturday, April 27th. We'll have a tent at one stop and apparently a performance space at a different stop and we'll geek out all day on ukuleles and trains. We'll be rehearsing our songs on Sunday April 14th and April 21st at Washington Heights from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will all be easy strum-along stuff, so dust off those nylon strings and bring $5 each week and come hang out. We have new music, old music, and cookies. Bring a friend too and we'll spend a couple of weeks having musical fun. Here's the RTD website with the info:

Second: Ukulele Broadway Style. I am teaching a four-week class at Lakewood Cultural Center on Wednesday nights April 24 to May 15 on Broadway show tunes. Call Washington Heights to sign up at 303-987-5436
and then send me an e-mail with your favorite musical numbers so I can arrange some songs for us to learn. Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserable, Sound of Music, or whatever ... but please, no Grease. :)

Third: Campfire Ukulele. We're going to teach a campfire songs for the ukulele class in the old barn in the Lakewood Heritage Center this summer on every other Saturday in June. Debbie Turner is going to help us get our BBQ tunes rawkin' the right way, so sign up for that class too at 303-987-5436. This is a more-the-merrier situation, so find a friend and get 'em a ukulele and let's go.

Fourth: Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain performed in Denver a couple of nights ago to wonderful reviews. Go YouTube their name, and you'll see they're something sweet. You have a second chance to catch them in Boulder on Thursday April 18th at Mackey Auditorium. I'm going to that concert and hoping to catch up with those troublesome Boulder ukulele-ists.

Finally: Stop by the Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra website for updates on ukulele shenanigans going on with other ukulele groups in the area. The RMUO will probably have a concert in June or maybe July so stay tuned. If you know of other cool stuff, let me know and I'll add it to the site.

Going forth to ukulele-ify. You should too.

Concert Order for Sunday April 7, 2013

RMUO Plan for Sunday March 10, 2013

We WILL have practice tomorrow, but obviously if the roads are still crummy you should make a good decision about whether travel is wise or not. In light of that, we will work on whatever music we can based on who makes it. Small groups should feel free to come early to practice.

Also, I'm going to move our concert date out a bit. We're tackling a huge amount of music and I'd rather us move the date and sound great, rather than rush into something we might not quite be ready to do. I haven't found a time or place yet, but stay tuned.

Stay warm. Pay one of the neighbor kids to shovel your driveway. Practice your ukulele as if you're sitting on a beach in Hawaii.

They're having an open painting session in our room until 2:30 p.m., so if you come early for practice, the basement will be the best place. Last week the doors were locked early by the pottery people and one member was locked out. :( From now on we will make sure the FRONT door is unlocked until 4 p.m.

Sunday February 3 ... Super Bowl Sunday

This is our "everyone" rehearsal, so treat it as if it were a concert. If you need to leave early to get in front of a television and behind a Budweiser, we understand.

Everyone, please download the latest Strum Along Book from the forum.

Ukulele Union, please download Cherry Pink from the forum if you don't already know how to play it.

Here's the pieces we'll play, but not necessarily in this order:

I've added Saturday, April 27 as an optional fun day for us. RTD is opening the West Line and we're gonna go rock a train stop or two. :)

Keep practicing. Sound brilliant by Sunday ... and then every day after that.

Okay, enough goofing off. We're back to work on January 6th. Bring a friend and show up early. We have lots to discuss, plan and play. Massive video, sound, and photos will be loading onto this website over the next few weeks. Let's RAWK!

November 20, 2012
If you are thinking of joining our orchestra, it will be best to wait until January. We are in the final rehearsals for our holiday concert and we'd love for you to join us when we begin new music in January. Orchestra members: Rehearsal on November 25th is OPTIONAL. December 2 and 9 are ESSENTIAL. Also, the publicity poster is up and ready for distribution. Go to the front page of the website to download.

There's no stopping it now! We're hosting our holiday open house and Christmas sing & strum along at The Bug Theatre on December 16th at 2 p.m. Doors open at 1:15 p.m. and we're recommending a $5 donation at the door.

The new website is live ... and you're looking at it ... and it's a total mess. Check back as I load it full of super cool and exciting things the rest of the world would like to discover.

March 20, 2012
The ukulele orchestra is under way! Come join us.

I've given two Saturday workshops in a row to 31 people and nobody died. We have 16 more people in the Thursday night classes and not even a scratch. You should come take a class too and see if you survive.

March 11, 2012
We had a BIG week in ukulele ... and an even bigger one awaits!

Thursday night we passed out Shamrock cupcake diplomas to a dozen graduates from the first-ever City of Lakewood ukulele six-week intensive. Congratulations to all of you and remember, you have four free half-hour private lessons waiting for you because I can't read a calendar. Please e-mail me to set up a time to take advantage of those before the end of the year. And of course, RAWK ON!!

Also, and equally exciting, nineteen brave people showed up Saturday to check out the ukulele and I think we had a good time getting everybody up and running. If you were in the Saturday class, don't be shy about staying in touch with me. E-mail me and your ukulele world will be filled with rainbows and fun. Stop by the songs page to find more two-chord songs and more popular tunes you can try.

We have new classes starting this week.

And, in case you haven't heard, the organizational meeting of the Lakewood Orchestra for Ukulele Domination (LOUD) is Sunday. Bring $5 and come check it out.

    Sunday March 18, 2012 from exactly 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Show up 15 minutes early to help set up. Plan to stay 10 minutes late to un-set up.
Do not arrive after 3 p.m. because the doors will be locked and we'll be rawkin' out.

March 6, 2012
The super big totally awesome announcement! Ta da da da da da daaaaaah.....

Put this in your calendar right now!

Lakewood Orchestra for Ukulele Domination (LOUD)

Sunday March 18, 2012 from exactly 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Show up 15 minutes early to help set up. Plan to stay 10 minutes late to un-set up.
Do not arrive after 3 p.m. because the doors will be locked and we'll be rawkin' out.

Washington Heights Arts Center
6375 West 1st Street
Lakewood, CO 80226 MAP

Please call Washington Heights (303) 987-5436 this week if you're positive you'll be there and get on the list. There will be a $5 weekly drop-in fee to support the city's facilities and if you go through the official channels they have ways to save you some money. Call them! You can also pay on the day of rehearsal.

Start looking for one song that you love that you also think would be a worthy piece for a large group to present in a new and ukulele-ified way. Try to think of something surprising and genius. Understand that not every song will work, but we'll be going through a collaborative process to create our first show.

Also, talk to other ukulele players you know in the city and encourage them to join our e-mail list so they can see how sweet and fun we are and hopefully we can lure them out of the basement.

We'll be going on a world tour which I presume will include a trip to California to pick up our Grammy award in the distant future, but you don't have to pack quite yet. But do be ready for cookies and dreaming on March 18.

Skills: Be aware that we'll try to accommodate a range of playing abilities. Experienced players should obviously be okay with taking a leadership role and playing solos and duets while newer players should be okay with performing in a supportive role. There will be sheet music (gasp! ... I will help you) and it will require full-on hard-core practice time at home each week. Also be aware we'll often be videotaping and photographing, so if you have an aversion to being famous, this may not be the place for you.

February 26, 2012
Let's see, what's new? I added two songs to the two-chord song book and four songs to the YouTube play-along book. Check out the updates on the songs page.

If you're in the Thursday night class, go to the homework page to be reminded of things you can work on.

And, I just sent out the newsletter. Make sure it showed up in your e-mail, and encourage other people you know who might have an interest in the ukulele to get on our e-mail list. It'll make the world a more ukulele friendly place.

February 21, 2012
Website changes: I moved the chord chart to its own page to try to make this front page easier to read on a cell phone. I have lots more chord shapes to build, but the ones that are there are lovely, right? I've added a menu bar at the top of each page on the website to help you find your way around.

I have the complete list of classes on the left hand column ... even ones that are theoretical at the moment. E-mail me if you have questions. Sign up for some stuff!!

I'm moving all of our songs to their own page. It's a mess right now, but it'll get better.

I've added a preliminary orchestra page. Let's discuss the goals and expectations to see if everybody can live with them.

If you're in the Thursday night class, make sure you've read the newsletter.

February 16, 2012
I've added some ukulele events going on around the area to the calendar on the left. To wit:

Denver Ukulele Community
Regular Meeting

Downstairs in the Cafe. At Swallow Hill Music!

Fort Collins/Stuart Yoshida
Chord Melody demystified.
Saturday February 25th. 10 to noon.
Everyday Joe's in Fort Collins.

Edgewater Coffee Company
Saturday February 25th: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Also note: Swallow Hill reports via Facebook that only 100 UkeFest tickets remain. Better contact Swallow Hill to get your tickets soon!

February 14, 2012
We have scheduled classes into early summer. Save the dates. See the left hand column for all the details.

Thursday night students: NO PEEKING! I am uploading the beginnings of a two-chord song book and we'll do a few of those songs this week.

I've added lots and lots more chord shapes. See the table to the right to work on whatever ones you need.

I also moved our must-see videos to their own page because the code was freaking out my free web page editor.

February 13, 2012
I've added chord fingerings for C major, A minor, F major and G major in the right hand column. Do you have them memorized yet? I am adding additional chord fingerings and keys as fast as my old laptop will go.

Also, try playing along to the list of songs in the Key of C on YouTube and keep working on Living with Plastics, Jamaica Farewell, Tip Toe Through the Tulips and My Spaghetti Monster.

February 7, 2012
Hi everyone! Thank you for being brave and helping build the ukulele program supported by the City of Lakewood's Heritage, Culture & Arts program.

I am starting this page today (and I know it's ugly and I will jazz it up!) to be a collection of things we've covered in the classes and to be a way of (hopefully) gathering those of you who are excited about the ukulele to do something really big.
